1,2-Dichloropropane (78-87-5) is a colorless liquid with a boiling point of 95.4°C and a melting point of -70°C. It has a vapor pressure of 28kPa at 19.6°C, a density of 1.1595, and a refractive index of n25D1.437. This organic intermediate is soluble in ethanol, ether, and water (0.27g/100g at 20°C) and is flammable with a flash point of 21°C.
In terms of toxicity, guinea pigs, rabbits, and rats exposed to 1600mg/L of 1,2-Dichloropropane for 7 hours showed tolerance, with the maximum allowable concentration in air being 25mg/L.
1,2-Dichloropropane is commonly used for grain fumigation in combination with other fumigants. It is effective in soil fumigation to control nematodes, wireworms, and larvae of beetles at a rate of 20-30ml/m2D-D mixture.
